Environmental sustainability is integral to improving Gates operations and processes.
Our sustainability strategy is designed to move beyond calculating impacts and into anticipating and managing risks and efficiencies: we work to understand the direct and indirect impacts of our decisions, so that we can cascade benefits through our business and ultimately, to the customer.
GOVERNANCE | TECHNOLOGY | ENVIRONMENT | STEWARDSHIP
As a materials science company, we are focused on innovation, which makes technology an essential part of how we think about delivering on our sustainability promise to our customers. This is why our approach to sustainability is aligned to the Gates GTES Framework, which brings Technology into ESG.
GOVERNANCE
DOING BUSINESS
THE RIGHT WAY
Our integrity-first approach guides every level of decision-making at Gates. The Gates Board oversees and has responsibility for environmental, social and governance issues, and our ESG Steering Committee ensures that our sustainability goals are aligned throughout the organization. All our co-manufacturers and independent suppliers sign up to the Gates Supplier Code of Conduct, committing them to comply with environmental, labor, and human rights practices.
WITH FULL AND ACCURATE REPORTING
Our Climate-related Financial Disclosure (CFD) is aligned with the UK Government’s TCFD framework and is published in our UK Annual Report.
Gates Sustainability Reporting is based on the sustainable development goals (SDG) of the Sustainability Accounting Standards Board (SASB), Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) and United Nations.

TECHNOLOGY
ENVIRONMENTAL INSPIRATION
FOR ECO-INNOVATION™
Through Eco-Innovation, Gates engineers focus on improvements that minimize environmental impact across material selection, design, manufacturing, transportation, customer use, and end-of-life. Each stage offers us opportunities to create value upstream and downstream, helping minimize our environmental footprint and the footprints of our suppliers, customers, and end users.
This means we are now using less resources to create products that are more energy-efficient, and last longer. For example, we use recycled materials and remanufacture products to reduce our use of virgin materials. We are reducing our scrap rates and making things smaller. And our next-generation products and technologies are enabling us to scale up solutions with positive social and environmental impacts, especially in applications where reducing emissions, improving energy efficiency, and enhancing durability are critical priorities.
ENVIRONMENT
CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT
FOR REDUCED ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT
As individuals and as a company, we work together to reduce the impact of our global ecological footprint, by increasing energy efficiency, minimizing environmental impacts (such as waste generation and water consumption), and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
We closely measure our progress towards our sustainability goals, and this is where we stood at the end of 2023. Reducing overall energy consumption has been challenging, simply because we have grown as a global business, but overall energy efficiency had improved by 10%.
STEWARDSHIP
GLOBAL FOCUSED,
LOCALLY IMPLEMENTED
Our sustainability efforts are rooted in our ongoing commitment to the communities and environments in which we live and work. Gates supports environmental and community stewardship as an organization, and through a variety of local initiatives that have meaningful and positive impact.
We benefit from creativity, passion, and expertise of our employees around the world and recognize that social impacts and employee well-being are critical to the success of our organization. As we continually improve our manufacturing process and optimize resource efficiency, we also invest in the mental and emotional well-being, social support, and physical and financial wellness of our workforce.
