Gates showcases Energy Solution technologies at fourth annual MEMA Legislative Summit

Energy Solution Technologies | Gates Corporation
Washington, D.C. – Gates Corporation showcased its line of system solutions in their energy savings product line at the Motor and Equipment Manufacturers Association (MEMA) Legislative Summit in Washington D.C. The event, held June 10-11, at the Hyatt Regency Washington on Capitol Hill and the Cannon House Office Building, helped educate elected officials on the important issues facing the nation’s largest economic sector. It also reinforced the significant economic contributions made by automotive suppliers at the local, state and national levels.

This was Gates Corporation’s fourth year as a participant in the event, which also included a Congressional Reception and Supplier Fair. This year Gates was selected to be part of a two-company “best practices” panel that shared how the company has successfully managed to grow its involvement and influence in Washington.

“Gates future as a driver of energy solutions technologies relies on the support of government and industry advocates,” said John Bohenick, President, Gates Corporation. “This event helps to demonstrate to new and current legislative members our Company’s commitment to energy solution technologies, particularly today as businesses and consumers continue to struggle with higher energy costs. Through our participation, Gates aims to serve as a positive influence within the automotive industry for energy conservation and ongoing technology development.”

Gates showcased several of its energy solution technologies during the two-day event including Gates Electro-Mechanical Drive™ (EMD). This start-stop technology for hybrid cars reduces both fuel consumption and emissions. It is currently available on the 2008 Hybrid Saturn Vue Green Line and Saturn Aura and the 2008 Chevy Malibu. Independent studies have shown fuel savings of 6 – 10%, depending on the application, and more than 20% savings in urban traffic.

Gates CabRunner Integrated Power System. This system reduces fuel use and emissions by eliminating the need for semi-truck drivers to idle their engine while sleeping during a long-haul trip in order to power cab accessories such as air conditioning, heat and lights. Every year more than
960 million gallons of diesel fuel is consumed due to idling. The CabRunner™ Integrated Power System can reduce this idling fuel consumption by 60% and greatly reduce the idling emissions.

A third solution featured was Gates E3 Drive System, which reduces fuel consumption in passenger vehicles and light trucks. The two-speed drive system allows accessories such as the air conditioning compressor and alternator to operate at idling speed, where fuel is used most efficiently by these accessories, while the engine still operates at drive speed. The driver will not notice a difference in the vehicle operation but will see their fuel consumption reduced by 5% or more. Gates will be working to accelerate the availability of this solution in the Automotive Aftermarket focused on Fleets using SUV and light trucks, and eventually to all owners of SUV and light trucks to help them improve fuel economy in their existing vehicles.
