Gates advances in higher capacity EPDM Micro-V® belts and tensioners are driving Gates pioneering research and development in Belt-driven Starter Generators (B-ISG). Gates new Electro-Mechanical Drive (EMD) System allows starter-generator systems to use an advanced belt drive for almost completely silent vehicle start-up.
Technological Advancements
- EMD starter-generator belt drive systems allow the engine to stop when the vehicle is stationary, then restarts the engine almost instantaneously.
- EMD spins the engine to a very high cranking speed, which gives a rapid, silent and fuel efficient start.
- Both emissions and fuel consumption are reduced with the EMD stop/start operating strategy. Independent studies have shown fuel savings of 6 to 10%, depending on the application, and even more than 20% savings in urban traffic.
- The EMD system offers the potential to recover braking energy and to use stored electricity to boost acceleration. The system can schedule the generation of electric energy to times when it is cheap to produce, i.e. usually events of vehicle deceleration when no fuel is injected and the engine brakes the vehicle.
- EMD is applicable with either 14 or 42 volt system Enables Start/Stop, torque assist and brake regeneration
Attributes of EMD
- EMD technology can be installed right now with very minimal implications for other vehicle systems or the package. It reduces cost without compromising durability, servicing cost or driveability. Fuel saving features are the automatic engine stop/start operation during vehicles standstill and regenerative braking during vehicle deceleration phases.

Systems Engineering & Technology
As our many worldwide OE partners have learned, Gates can enhance optimization efforts by getting involved early – right at the design stage. Gates’ approach is one of system engineering, to find the best solutions based on the highly interdependent nature of the individual components. Through the years, Gates has developed the engineering skills, including simulation programs and rig test methods, to engineer complete, integrated and highly functional systems.
